📖 How to Use This App

👁️ What is a Sight Word?

A sight word is a common word that a student should be able to recognize and read instantly, just by looking at it. The goal is for the child to read the word right away without needing to pause or sound it out letter by letter.

1. Assess Current Knowledge (Start Here)

In the "Assess" tab, test the student's current knowledge. Show them the words one by one. If they know a word immediately and effortlessly, mark it as mastered. If not, move it to introduce.

2. Introduce New Words Gradually

In the "Introduce" tab, take the words the student didn't know and introduce them in small batches (about 3 to 5 words at a time). Point to the word, say it out loud, and have the student repeat it back to you.

3. Practice Daily & End on a Positive Note

In the "Practice" tab, spend just a few minutes a day reviewing. The deck shuffles daily. If they miss a word, it goes to the back of the line so they can try again.

Tip: We recommend keeping about 10-15 words in your practice pile at a time, and a maximum of 20, to avoid overwhelming the student.

What does "Ending with a positive" mean? It means making sure the practice session finishes on a high note, with the child feeling successful rather than frustrated. By putting missed words at the back of the deck, the child gets another chance to read them correctly. The session only ends when they have successfully read the word independently, building their confidence and leaving them proud of their progress!

4. Handling Difficult Words

If a word gets 3 consecutive minus (-) marks during practice, it might be too difficult right now. The app will notify you in the Practice Log and suggest removing it from practice to re-introduce it again later.

5. Achieving Mastery

A word is automatically mastered when they get 3 consecutive '+' marks with a weekend in between the first and last practice. Celebrate their progress, and then introduce a new word!

6. Review Periodically

Even after words are marked as mastered, occasionally mix them back into your practice sessions to ensure they stay fresh. If they miss a mastered word, move it back to Practice!
